The Buffelgrass Invasion

What does it mean to you?

You may have heard of the invasive species Buffelgrass that has been growing at an alarming rate in your neighborhood.

Buffelgrass is a native plant species from the savannahs of Africa. It was introduced to Arizona years ago and has spread rapidly.

Buffelgrass is considered an invasive species to our Sonoran Desert for several reasons:

  • The grass grows in dense stands often near roadsides and corners in the urban interface
  • It competes with native plants for moisture, often choking surrounding plants
  • It burns more easily and at a higher temperature than native grasses
  • Controlled burns and plant removal do not stop its spread

With our severe drought conditions in Southern Arizona, buffelgrass is a very dangerous fire risk to our urban interface areas.

Help firefighters better protect your property by creating 30 feet of defensible space around your home, clearing the area of dead brush and dry foliage. Click here to see a photo slide show of a recent brush fire in Tucson involving buffelgrass.

Please visit the Southern and Central Arizona  Buffelgrass Response Center Website at www.buffelgrass.org to learn more about buffelgrass and to find alternative resources to remove this invasive plant from your property.

Working together we can help stop its migration into the Sonoran Desert and prevent a devastating wildland fire that could threaten your home and property.
